About AI for Families
Responsible AI ◌ Data Privacy ◌ Tech Education
No sooner did someone say *ChatGPT* than we found ourselves witnessing artificial intelligence applications creeping into every aspect of our day-to-day live.
Maybe you are excited. Or worried. Or maybe you have decided that you’ll tackle it all *later* 😵💫… But hopefully I can give you a few ideas about how to get started owning your AI destiny, and that of your family, today.
It Starts With Data
Powering AI innovation takes an enormous amount of high-quality data. And that data comes, in large part, from us. You may have heard it said that data is the “new oil” of the AI age. Well, it means our information is a hot commodity — and it needs to be treated as such.
This is where my own background leading data-rich consumer technology companies has given me a unique perspective. It’s also why today I’m focused on responsible AI, data privacy and technology education.
But… It’s Just the Beginning
The truth is that artificial intelligence 🤖 is here to stay. And it’s been coming for a long time — it’s just advancements in computing that have helped it gain speed. In fact, I wrote the below article for the Huffington Post more than seven years ago.
But there is one fact that makes this current period of innovation unlike any other…
Every human being with a digital footprint contributes to the pool of data required to fuel AI innovation, and so the truth is simple: there is no AI without all of us.
This means that we have so much more power than we realize. Even a little knowledge will go far to ensuring a bright and empowered future for our kids. 🚀🤖⚡️
Who am I? 🦸♀️
I have spent the majority of my career talking about our relationship to technology and data as a startup leader and as an advocate for tech “literacy” (tips, tricks, and why we all should be able to take full advantage of technology equally), as well as, data privacy. I’m also now a Certified Ethical Emerging Technologist (CEET) with a business focused on helping companies and organizations adopt responsible AI practices.
Tech-Obsessed Mom With a Mission
More of us need to help even out the playing field as new innovation enters the picture, and consumers struggle to be given a seat at the table. I hope I can do my part to share the tools we need to feel more empowered.
I wrote the below article more than 7 years ago, and of course, AI has been in development for years longer.
Why does that matter? It means there won’t be time to ease in here. The speed of deployment and commercialization of AI technology will be as destabilizing as exciting. We must keep up.
What’s Next?
I believe that emotional resilience, critical thinking, free debate and independent thought are some of the key skills we need to sharpen in order to navigate AI innovation. And no group requires more support in flexing these mental muscles than our children.
The good news… we all have a say in what’s next. If our data fuels AI innovation, then we have a stake in its development.
And if our data is the fuel used to drive this new AI innovation, then we must then act like stakeholders, and not just passive observers.
